Frequently asked questions

Questions about Aero Markdown.

Aero Markdown is a native Markdown reader for macOS 14 or later. Read local documentation, notes, READMEs, and files written by coding agents. No account. No cloud.

What it is and how it reads

What is Aero Markdown?

Aero Markdown is a native macOS Markdown reader for files already on your Mac. Open a file or a folder and read with a file tree, rendered page, and heading outline. It requires macOS 14 or later.

Does Aero Markdown need an account or a cloud library?

No. There is no account or cloud library. Files stay on your Mac, the app works offline, and nothing in a document is sent to a service.

Which Markdown features can I read?

Headings, lists, task lists, tables, highlighted code, local images, Mermaid diagrams, GitHub alerts, footnotes, and math. Syntax highlighting, Mermaid, and KaTeX ship inside the app. YAML front matter is hidden; its title becomes the page title only when the document has no H1.

How do links and navigation work?

Relative links between Markdown files inside the opened folder open in the app. Back and forward remember your place. You can also move to the next or previous document and copy a relative link to the current heading.

Files from coding agents

What happens when the open file changes on disk?

Reload documents when they change is enabled by default. If you have no unsaved edits, the page reloads and stays at the current heading. If you have edits, Aero Markdown keeps them and shows: This file changed on disk. Your edits are still here. You can choose Reload. If the file disappears, the app reports it. Only the open document is watched, not the entire folder.

Can Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf open the Markdown they write?

Yes, with an optional local setup command you copy and run yourself. Copy Setup Command is in the last welcome screen and in Settings below Reload documents when they change. The installed hooks open .md, .markdown, and .mdown files in the existing Aero Markdown window, in the background, without modifying the file. The hooks can be disabled or uninstalled.

Does the local hook support Codex?

No. Codex is not included in the local hooks. If Codex rewrites the document already open, automatic reload still detects it. A new file must be opened before it appears in the reader.

Does Aero Markdown contain an AI assistant?

No. Aero Markdown reads local files, including files written by coding agents. It has no AI chat and makes no model calls.

Reading, editing and export

Can I change the reading appearance?

Yes. Choose Serif, Sans, or Mono, then adjust type size, column width, line spacing, and zoom. Use system, light, or dark appearance, and hide the sidebar or heading outline when you want more room.

Can I print or export a document?

Yes. Print the rendered page, export it as a PDF, or save it as a local HTML file. Aero Markdown includes a Finder Quick Look extension that previews Markdown on the Mac.

Can I edit a document, and does opening it change the file?

Opening and rendering a document do not rewrite the source. You can edit the open Markdown document, use find and replace, and show a preview beside the source while editing. Save writes that file. You can also search the page or the folder.

Price, availability and support

How much does Aero Markdown cost?

Aero Markdown is $14.99 USD, one-time, for a lifetime Aero 1.x license for one Mac. Download and checkout are not available yet.

Are automatic app updates active?

No. The update menu exists, but update checks are off. They will remain off until an HTTPS appcast and a public key are configured.

How can I contact support?

Email support@aeromarkdown.app.

Is Aero Markdown available to download?

Not yet. Aero Markdown is $14.99 USD, one-time, for a lifetime Aero 1.x license for one Mac. Download and checkout are not available yet. Meanwhile, you can read a Markdown file in the free online reader.

Is Finder Quick Look part of macOS or Aero Markdown?

Quick Look is a macOS feature from Apple. Apps can provide a Quick Look extension for their file types. Aero Markdown includes a Markdown Quick Look extension, but the Mac app is not publicly available yet.

What is the difference between the online reader and the Mac app?

The free browser reader opens one local Markdown file or pasted text in your tab. It does not upload the document, follow links to local files, load images, or render Mermaid and math. The upcoming Mac app reads local folders and supports linked files, local images, Mermaid, math, and Finder Quick Look.
