A free reader is a real alternative
A paid Markdown reader needs to solve a problem you can name. QuickMD already documents a substantial native Mac reading workflow, so the comparison cannot rest on words such as native, offline or minimal. Those are shared goals.
Consider the document you actually open. A single README with a diagram and a small correction may be handled perfectly by a free reader. A folder containing a specification, architecture and decisions places more emphasis on the route between files. Aero Markdown’s proposition is that connected reading arrangement, not simply the ability to render Markdown.
The fair starting point is to try the available app with your own material. QuickMD’s product page describes its free distribution and current features. Aero Markdown’s native app is not yet public, so a decision to use QuickMD now does not require waiting for a comparison test.

The QuickMD repository documents the app, its commands and requirements. This is not a table of exclusive features: source editing, diagrams and reload are present on both sides.
An occasional correction is not the deciding feature
QuickMD’s current documentation describes switching to source at the reading position, saving and returning to the rendered page. It also describes what happens when another application changes the file. A comparison based on an older version could therefore invent a distinction that no longer exists.
Aero Markdown also lets you edit the current document. Its emphasis remains reading: the normal window shows the page, file tree and outline; the source and optional side-by-side preview appear during editing. If you are writing continuously, an editor may still be the more suitable place to work.
For occasional corrections, evaluate the transition rather than counting an edit-mode checkbox. Can you find the sentence, make the intended change, save and return to reading without losing context? Use a disposable copy so that the test does not affect your real notes.
What the connected-folder workflow needs to earn
The stronger case for Aero Markdown is a project that you read through, rather than a succession of unrelated files. The tree shows where the current document lives. Relative links carry you into supporting material. History provides a return path. The heading outline keeps a long page navigable at the same time.
Those elements should help with a concrete task. For a proposal, you might need to verify that each acceptance criterion has a supporting architectural decision. For a repository, you might follow a setup instruction into a deeper guide and return to the README. The value is a readable path through that set of files.
If QuickMD already gives you that path comfortably, there is no need to pay for another reader. If you repeatedly return to Finder to reconstruct the project, that is a useful need to test against Aero Markdown when a public build is available. The reading features show the intended arrangement.
Finder preview and agent output need separate checks
The QuickMD sources linked here do not establish a bundled Quick Look extension. That is a reason to check the current distribution, not evidence that the app can never offer one. Aero Markdown includes a Finder Quick Look extension that previews Markdown on the Mac.
For agent-written files, distinguish reload from auto-open. Reload updates the document you already have open. Aero Markdown’s optional local hooks can also open newly written Markdown from Claude Code, Cursor and Windsurf in the existing window. Codex is outside that hook list. Neither behavior should be inferred just because a product advertises live preview.
Try this before deciding to pay
Download the linked reading kit. Open its README in QuickMD, follow the specification, visit a supporting decision and return. Make one source correction in a copy. Finally, export a page with a table or diagram and open the PDF separately.
Write down the one thing you could not do comfortably, if anything. If there is no meaningful gap, keep the free app. If the gap concerns project navigation, compare that exact task with Aero Markdown after release. Aero Markdown is $14.99 USD, one-time, for a lifetime Aero 1.x license for one Mac. Download and checkout are not available yet.
BEFORE YOU CHOOSE
Questions, answered.
Can QuickMD edit the open file?
Yes. Its current documentation describes Source Edit, saving in place and handling external changes. Optional editing is not unique to Aero Markdown.
Does QuickMD support Mermaid and math?
Yes. Its product page documents both, together with live reload, an outline and PDF export. Check the exact diagram or formula you need in the version you install.
Why consider Aero Markdown if QuickMD is free?
Only for a workflow difference that matters to you, such as reading through an existing folder with relative links and history. If QuickMD already handles your documents well, there is no need to switch.
